W h y would tw o ceramic art-
ists at the top o f their game
choose to collaborate? T he
simple answer, suggests David
W . Arm strong, in his introduc-
tion to this elegant book© ,
is that “ each recognizes that
the other has talents as a ce-
ramic artist that complement
his ow n expert abilities.
..
and each has the aspiration to
participate in the creation o f
artw ork over and beyond his
individual capabilities.” Frank
Boyden, a native Oregonian
recognized for his masterful
line drawings incised into por-
celain vessels, and Tom C ole-
man, now o f N evada, known
for his prowess at the wheel
and his glaze formulations, are
tw o such artists. L ong estab-
lished through their w ork and
teaching as leaders in the field,
and lifelong friends w ith abso-
lute trust in one another, they
have periodically come to-
gether betw een 1985 and 2008
in different locations to create
the rare body o f w ork docu-
mented here in dramatic pho-
tographs that reveal the ves-
sels from different sides.

draw ings o f fish, birds and

through the fire,” w rites
D aniel Lam berton, a hum an-
ities professor, in his in-
sightful essay about the pro-
cess that brings everyth ing
together—significantly, these
39 vessels are grouped chron-
ologically according to the
type o f kiln w here they w ere
fired: the anagam a, the w ood-
fired train kiln, the G eil gas
kiln and the cross-draft soda
kiln. C om paring the Boyden-

ton sees it as a quest for clar-
ity and new ideas: “ B y build-
ing and testing and using each
oth er’s know ledge,” he says,
“ the men earned the opportu-
n ity to express a clear kind o f
art and, together, find a new
thing to say.”—
